The Pick-Up Pledge was born from a Eureka moment… I had been watching a climate rally filled with intensity and passion for change. Later that day, in the very spot the rally had been occurring, the area was left filled with garbage and graffiti. It was ironic, I had thought. A complete contradiction to what changing our environment should look like. The rally itself, like most rallies, was filled with great intentions and certainly did make a statement at the moment. The vision was right, but the action did not follow. The 5000 people that had gathered that day to show support for the environment, missed a key detail and reminded me of what my grandfather used to say- "If you want to go out and change the world someday, you can start by cleaning your bedroom”.
We can learn a lot from the past and have great intentions for the future, but everything starts with today. As the current caretakers of our communities and role models to the next generation, now is the pivotal time to take action. We can decide how to make our communities a better place to live, and what action we need to take to get there.
The Pick Up Pledge is a commitment to cleaning the path we walk in life. It is a movement that has great intentions but follows them up with action. If you are the type of person who wants to walk your path each day knowing you are doing your part, then join Your Local Community today!
